Organic Egypt project started in 2018 with the aim of supporting and expanding the organic sector in Egypt in cooperation with farmer associations, local advisory and training centers.
Currently, the project has two main partner associations: the Egyptian Biodynamic Association (EBDA), and the Integral Development Action of Minya (IDAM). One of the main pillars of the project is supporting the partner associations by enhancing the capacity of their staff, increasing the efficiency of internal activities, and developing innovative and new services to strengthen the organizational and administrative structure. The project also provides support to local certification bodies and is involved in networking with relevant stakeholders in the organic agriculture sector like research institutions, processors and retailers of organic and natural products, as well as governmental entities.
During the project’s lifetime, the partner associations supported over 10K Egyptian farmers in conversion to sustainable and organic farming systems. Further, the project conducted a variety of bilateral meetings with governmental and non-governmental actors, as well as academic institutions related to the agriculture sector, to thoroughly investigate the conditions of organic agriculture in Egypt, identify the main actors in the sector, and determine the most significant opportunities and obstacles. Organic Egypt published two-sector analysis reports that shed light on the main stakeholders of the organic agriculture sector in Egypt as well as the main challenges and opportunities of the sector (Organic report 2019 and 2021).
In this third Report, we attempt to complement what was presented in the previous two reports in cooperation with the environmental lawyer Ahmed El Saidi by focusing on the laws and policies that form the general framework of the organic farming sector, either directly or indirectly.
